Course Overview

In the United Kingdom, it has been a requirement for many years that domestic upholstered furniture is tested and compliant with regulations concerning its ignitibility behaviour i.e. its flammability performance. The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 (SI 1988/No.1324) and the amendments of 1989 (SI 1989/No. 2358) and 1993 (SI 1993/No. 207) set levels of fire resistance for domestic upholstered furniture, furnishings and other products containing upholstery.

The products covered by the regulations include the following where they have a filling material:
  • Furniture for use in a private dwelling.
  • Beds, headboards and mattresses
  • Sofa beds, futons and other convertible furniture
  • Nursery furniture
  • Garden furniture
  • Furniture in caravans
  • Scatter cushions, bean bags, pillows and seat pads
  • And the regulations also apply to Loose Covers for upholstered furniture
This course will increase your understanding of labelling of finished products, testing requirements and what you / your suppliers need to do to comply with the UK regulations.
