BACKGROUND
Some time ago, European standardisation projects for projectiles and cords were created in order to improve both the requirements and safety. Some of the received questions regarding interpretation have now been addressed in changes to EN 71-1. These questions include:
- How do you assess the length of two or more cords that may cause strangulation in toys for children under three years of age?
- What are the requirements for foam shaft projectiles?
- How do you deal with risks from shooting improvised projectiles?
- Is there a need for an EC-type examination covering toy helicopters?

BACKGROUND
The Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC (TSD) set new requirements for the migration of certain elements. Since the publication of EN 71-3:2013, new scientific data has led to the addition of three amendments to the standard to accommodate improvements in methodology. There have also been changes to lead regulations under the TSD. Major improvements to EN 71-3 and other applicable pieces of legislation and standards for toys will be discussed during the webinar.
PRESENTERS
Hing Wo Tsang – Global Information and Innovation Manager, Hardlines
Hing Wo joined SGS in 2003 as a Senior Laboratory Executive. Since joining the global platform in 2013, Hing Wo has supported a range of initiatives, from product compliance to regional projects. He is a member of SGS’s food contact committee and the chemical sub-group for toy safety. Prior to joining SGS, Hing Wo graduated with a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry and worked on anti-HIV and anti-infective agents.
Sanda Stefanovic – Toy expert
Sanda has nearly 30 years of experience in toy safety, and she has been an active member of the European toy standardisation committee since 1990. Since 2004, she has led the SGS toy technical committee and is responsible for the harmonisation and development of 24 SGS toy laboratories around the world. Sanda holds a MSc in Industrial Design and specialises in product safety.
