Energy Management Systems: Cost Savings Webinar

This webinar aims to promote understanding of ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management System standards and to enable organizations to establish the systems and processes necessary to reduce energy costs, boost efficiency and enhance competitiveness. The ISO 50001 energy management standard is a proven framework for manufacturers, corporations, utilities, energy service companies or entire organizations to manage all aspects of energy, including procurement and use.

Background

At the Paris Climate Conference (COP21) in December 2015, 195 countries adopted the first-ever universal, legally binding global climate deal. The agreement sets out a global action plan to put the world on track to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2°C. Governments agreed to come together every five years to set more ambitious targets as required by science and report to each other, and the public on how well they are doing to implement their targets. The U.N. approach has been to get countries to offer cuts in emissions and increases in renewable energy deployment, energy efficiency, or carbon sinks. An aim of progressively decarbonizing the global economy can provide a clearer signal to markets to shift long-term investments toward energy efficiency and other lower-carbon alternatives.

ISO 50001 is based on the management system model of continual improvement also used for other well-known standards such as ISO 9001 or ISO 14001. This makes it easier for organizations to integrate energy management into their overall efforts to improve quality and environmental management.

ISO 50001 provides organizations with an internationally recognized framework for implementing an energy management system (EnMS). The standard addresses the following:

• Develop a policy for more efficient use of energy
• Fix targets and objectives to meet the policy
• Measurement, documentation, and reporting of energy use and consumption
• Use data to better understand and make decisions about energy use
• Measure the results
• Design and procurement practices for energy-using equipment, systems and processes
• Review how well the policy works
• All variables affecting energy performance that can be monitored and influenced by the organization 
• Continually improve energy management

An EnMS helps an organization internalize the policies, procedures, and tools to systematically track, analyze and improve energy efficiency. With ISO 50001, energy management is integrated into normal business processes involving multiple types of employees across the organization.

Terry has four years experience managing an Environmental Management System for a manufacturing organization with a Climate Change Agreement and a further eight years experience of auditing Environmental Management Systems. Terry is an ISO 50001:2011 Lead Auditor with three years experience conducting certification audits across a wide spectrum of industry sectors.

Mr. Eric Huang - Global Product Manager, Energy/Sustainability, SGS Group

Eric has 26 years environmental engineering and management experience in energy and climate change audit and consulting. Eric has more than thirty ISO 50001:2011 cases audit experience.
