Sustainability Leaching Tests for Building Materials
Leaching tests for building materials – comply with the new European standards for construction products.
New European standards under development provide methods for determining whether dangerous substances are released from construction products. If construction products are to bear CE markings, their producers must provide data on the release of dangerous substances in the Declaration of Performance (DoP). These new European standards are governed by the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and will become harmonised standards. This means that they will apply to all construction products for which harmonised standards apply.
To comply with the new standards, producers of construction products must use new leaching tests for dangerous substances. Unlike the old tests, they do not focus only on the leaching of heavy metals and salts. They also measure the leaching of organic components, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and oils. Companies that use organic compounds that may leach from their construction products can use these tests to find out whether these products can be marketed in Europe.
We conduct leaching tests in compliance with the new standards.
The new European standards concern CEN TS 16637-1 through 3, including:
- TS 16637-3 – upflow percolation test. European column test for granular materials. Type of materials:
- CDW aggregates
- Steel slags
- Copper slags
- Rubber crumbs for artificial turf fields
- TS16637-2 – dynamic surface leaching test. Diffusion (tank) test for moulded building materials. Type of materials:
- Ceramic products
- Bituminous waterproofing materials
- Plastics flat roofing
- Cellular concrete
- Lime sandstone
- EPS insulation materials
- Mineral wool products
- Facade boards
- Rigid PU foam
- PVC window frames
- Building metals
Why choose leaching tests for building materials from SGS?
We conduct leaching tests in our environmental building materials laboratory, where we own a fully automatic seven stage automatic column test that complies with the new regulations.
Our experts have years of experience performing leaching tests on a wide variety of building materials. They can provide advice on:
- EU building and environment legislation
- Improving environmental performance
- Research design and results interpretation
- Product development
