What are two pieces of advice for companies looking to implement certification?

1 – Keep it simple and keep it focused. It is very easy to let any management system become burdensome with unnecessary procedures and tasks. Focus on what is essential and what you can influence. Ensure you get buy-in across the organisation by engaging people and making sure that your management system is a true reflection of your organisation, risks, objectives and culture.

2 – Leadership. Leadership commitment is incredibly important to all aspects of your business, including the success of a management system. When people see buy-in from the leadership team, they are much more likely to get behind everything you are trying to achieve. Evidence of leadership is not just a requirement of every management system standard - it is essential for it to work and add value.

What are the main advantages you see clients realising after implementing certification?

There is a vast selection of benefits from implementing management systems, regardless of it being, quality, environmental or information security. It provides all organisations with a framework to ensure that their processes and procedures are robust, add value, and that their compliance obligations are met.

Ultimately, it proves to a global audience that they can trust in the organisation to work to a certain “standard” and that their processes and procedures have been audited against an international standard by a UKAS accredited certification body.

Why do AvISO work with SGS through the Consultants Connect Scheme?

We have always had a very positive working relationship with SGS United Kingdom Ltd and have always found their auditors, and the wider team, to be professional, friendly and helpful. Our experience of SGS auditors is that they have an exceptional wealth of knowledge and technical expertise and they always bring real value to the audits.

Any other advice or information you want people to be aware of regarding certification?

Implementation of a management system requires your time and honesty. The more you put in the more you will get out of it.

Challenge your consultant, if you do not agree with the advice given ask why, often there is another way to comply with the standard in question.

A well-implemented management system can be much more than the sum of its parts and can help any organisation. If you are not getting value from your management system, ask why?
