City of Paris Achieves ISO 20121 Sustainable Event Certification for UEFA Euro 2016
The city of Paris has achieved ISO 20121 certification for the organization of the UEFA Euro 2016 football championship, with certification services provided by SGS.
The award of the ISO 20121 certification commends the work of the city of Paris in the eco-design and eco-management of UEFA Euro 2016. The certification was awarded for the first time at the London Olympic Games in 2012, and is currently the most demanding standard in terms of environmental sustainability for the organization of a sports event.
The standard validates the compliance of the Parisian authorities in four major areas:
- Improving the social acceptability of hosting major international sporting events
- Promoting the inclusion of all Parisians during the event
- Minimizing the environmental footprint of the event
- Demonstrating an innovative approach to sustainability, creating solutions for tomorrow’s events and cities
Fabrice Egloff, President of SGS France, comments: "The appointment of SGS to provide certification for this major event confirms that we are the partner of choice for assessing our customers’ commitments to provide products or services to the highest standards of quality and sustainability.”
A total of over 150 actions have been taken to achieve the certification, in areas including employment, the promotion of sport for all audiences, waste collection, green building, assisting Parisian associations and startups, and building a legacy for the community.
The Council of Paris adopted a charter for sustainable events in 2015. The city will host the Climbing World Championships in September 2016, the Men's Handball World Championship in January 2017 and the World Wrestling Championships in August 2017, and UEFA Euro 2016 provides a blueprint for the sustainable organization of these events.
Jean-François Martins, responsible for sports and tourism for Mairie de Paris, added: "The benefit of this certification is the legacy we leave to the city of Paris through the organization of major international events like UEFA Euro 2016. The heritage of not only the sports and tourism aspects, but also the social and environmental dimensions, will benefit all Parisians well into the future."
