SGS Baseefa has been granted one of the first international acceptances to allow them to issue certification for non-electrical equipment used in hazardous areas.

The acceptance by the IECEx international certification system came after an extensive assessment of SGS' processes and systems. The certification covers equipment such as conveyor belts, mixers, pumps, compressors and hydraulic power-packs.

The technical details of the two new standards are: -

  • ISO 80079-36 Part 36: Non-electrical equipment for explosive atmospheres - basic method and requirements
  • ISO 80079-37 Part 37: Non-electrical equipment for explosive atmospheres – Non-electrical type of protection constructional safety “c”, control of ignition source “b”, liquid immersion “k”.

Both these standards build on the existing IEC 60079 series and will replace the familiar EN 13463 series of European standards which have been used until now.

SGS Baseefa Operations Manager Adam Crowe commented: “These new acceptances provide our customers with extra opportunities to get international recognition and certification for their products.

“Up until now, all we have been able to provide under the self-declaration ATEX regulations was the storage of their technical files and the issue of voluntary certificates.

“We are aware that many users of equipment were unhappy with the level of confidence provided by the technical file storage guidelines (where the ATEX Notified Body does not verify the contents of the file), and were demanding full certification of the products from their suppliers.

“We are delighted that our expert team will now be able to provide this,” said Adam.
