SGS United Kingdom Ltd has been accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) to discover asbestos within soils.

Soil contaminated with asbestos can be found in more generalised places than may be expected. For example, buildings that have been demolished which contained asbestos and were not disposed of properly can be a threat. Asbestos can become a health risk if the fibres become airborne and are inhaled, so it is only right that everyone must be protected against the risk of asbestos-related disease resulting from the exposure to airborne fibres. Fortunately there are legal requirements that prohibit anyone re-using asbestos-contaminated soil: professional, accredited asbestos identification from SGS is a key part of a control process that protects us all.

Managing asbestos contaminated soil

This new service enables SGS to offer a full service mix of asbestos identification, including field work and analysis. With this new service to assess the risk of asbestos and find appropriate control measurements it is important to identify the type of asbestos within soil samples. The techniques SGS use to identify asbestos are accredited by UKAS, and are appropriate for testing soils from railway lines to old building rubble, from any part of the world.

Paul King, Business Risk and Technical Manager for SGS in Consett, commented on this new service: “We are delighted to be able to offer an all round asbestos identification service. This new accreditation means we can now meet client demand for quicker testing and identification of soil samples. Furthermore we have increased our own service to make it a more comprehensive offering of asbestos assessment. Before this accreditation we had a wealth of experience in field work and analysis of other materials for asbestos content, so soils is a brilliant addition. We also have a dedicated team looking at this process and how we can integrate it further into our online client information system, as well as our wider information services for clients.”

With an established track record in this field, SGS have all the experience, qualifications and insurance to be able to support clients with any asbestos testing and field work they may need. To speak to a dedicated asbestos specialist call +44 (0) 1207 599249.
