In December 2014 NRT Building Services Group Ltd achieved certification to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards.

ISO 9001 shows a company has documented their business processes, and manages them effectively. This helps to drive improvements internally and attract new business. ISO 14001 shows they continually improve their environmental performance by implementing and maintaining a programme of activites to control, review and monitor in order to minimise their impact on the environment.

NRT Building Services Group Ltd is an electrical and mechanical engineering company based in Banstead, Surrey. They carry out domestic, commercial and industrial works for government authorities, private clients, contractors and local businesses.

Why NRT wanted joint certification

“We wanted to attract new business,” says Quality Assurance Supervisor Lee Russell.

“Now we’re in a stronger position to win contracts when completing pre-qualifying questionnaires(PQQs). Having these standards is proof of compliance and helps in saving time when filling out these forms.

“Also we’re committed to respecting the environment. Under the WEEE directive we have to do a lot of recycling of lamps, tubes, and controlled gear and fittings, which have environmental impacts that we are committed to reducing.”

Why they chose SGS?

NRT worked for United House (a social housing contractor in SE England) and Lee Russell liked their structure. “I researched them and I saw the SGS certificates on their website and I followed up. I could see SGS were an experienced and highly thought-of company.

At stage one, SGS identified a few items which could be raised as non-conformities at stage two if left unaddressed.  They looked at our processes and then we rectified the issues.”

Benefits of certification

“It drives improvements internally and makes it easier to exchange information. It’s speeding up processes because everyone knows what information they have to ask for. It makes it easier and quicker to fill out PQQs and we’re winning more work,” adds Lee Russell.

Advice to other organisations considering the standards

Lee Russell recommends appointing an internal auditor/consultant.

“Use someone who knows your company. You might have management documentation already in place, and you know what has to be done. When you go through the clauses in the standards you can adapt them to your business processes.”

He also suggests a 6-monthly audit with SGS, rather than a yearly one to start with.

“You need to make sure everyone is working well. The audit process with SGS is invaluable for that,” adds Lee Russell.

NRT are now working towards certification to OHSAS 18001 and hope to have it completed by June 2015.
