Introduced in 2011 by ADISA (Asset Disposal and Information Security Alliance) the IT Asset Disposal (ITAD) Standard is a privately owned global standard in the IT Asset Disposal Industry.

Available to members of ADISA, the ITAD Standard has been developed to reflect a growing need for a benchmark security standard specifically written for an industry which handles the secure sanitisation of data on IT Assets. The standard covers all aspects of the services which could impact on data protection and environmental compliance.

Being able to draw on extensive experience and expertise in providing accredited certification against ISO 27001, the information security standard, SGS was ADISA’s obvious choice as sole audit partner.

Despite increasing regulatory pressure on organisations to protect data, there are still frequent news stories about data loss or breach which causes significant reputational and brand damage. The lack of controls within asset disposal by many of the constituent parts of this service leads to unnecessary risk taking, allowing opportunities for breach to permeate into the process. The ITAD Standard allows businesses to demonstrate commitment to secure asset disposal across all operational regions.

“ADISA has developed a certification process which will allow industry members to undertake an independent assessment of service capability based on a set of fixed criteria developed as a standard by interaction with industry, risk professionals, asset managers and forensic experts. ”says Steve Mellings, ADISA’s Managing Director“ The certification process performed by SGS will allow end users a clear indication of the capability of their IT Asset Disposal suppliers which will allow them greater confidence of data protection within the disposal process."
