SGS Runs First IRCA-Backed Energy Management Lead Auditor Course
SGS’s new course is the only one of its kind in the UK to meet the IRCA’s strict requirements in terms of syllabus, course materials and tutor expertise.
“IRCA certification gives both participants and their organisations the confidence that the course meets their needs and expectations,” says SGS Training Manager Peter Crack.
SGS’s EnMS Lead Auditor course gives participants the knowledge and skills needed to develop, conduct, monitor, review, report on and act on internal and external EnMS audits based on the new energy management standard, ISO 50001. Checking activities include evaluating the effectiveness of corrective and preventive action. The course also meets the requirements of ISO 19011 (auditing management systems) and ISO 17021 (conformity assessment), as applicable.
‘Enjoyable and successful’
SGS’s first IRCA-certified, ISO 50001-compliant EnMS Lead Auditor course was held at Staverton Park near Coventry. Fully booked, the five-day course comprised lectures, seminars, workshops and role play. Marks are based on continual assessment and a written examination.
“Everyone enjoyed the course, appreciated all the interaction and support, completed it successfully and provided positive feedback at the end,” says Peter Crack of SGS.
On passing the course, participants can go on to register with the IRCA as EnMS internal auditors, auditors and lead auditors, depending on their experience.
Introduced by the International Organization for Standardization in June 2011, ISO 50001 provides a framework and specifies the requirements needed to establish, implement, maintain and continually improve an EnMS.
It is used to help offices, plants or whole organisations improve the energy efficiency of their equipment, systems and processes. “At SGS we’ve seen a lot of interest in ISO 50001,” says Peter Crack. “I think this reflects organisations’ growing concern about energy sources, energy efficiency and emissions.”
“They find this standard highly relevant as it sets out ways – through a plan-do-check-act based system – to control and reduce their energy costs.”
Other ISO 50001-related courses
SGS’s other ISO 50001-related training includes awareness courses and seminars for managers and employees, implementation workshops and an internal auditor course. “So far all our ISO 50001-related courses have been completely full,” says Peter Crack.
“Most participants are environmental and energy managers tasked with implementing or auditing their companies’ energy management systems.”
“We’ve received bookings from small, medium and large organisations, in both industrial and service sectors. All in all we’ve had a tremendous response.”
As with EnMS Lead Auditor, SGS runs these courses regularly throughout the UK, and at organisations’ own premises on request.
