SGS in the UK has launched the Asbestos Risk Management Healthcheck to help landlords and managers of non-domestic premises, demolition or refurbishment projects, assess the effectiveness of their asbestos management procedures.

It is not enough to just identify asbestos, it must be correctly managed to avoid accidental exposure. Failures in management and procedure are the leading cause of accidental asbestos exposure in the UK, and the resulting fines can be considerable.

In 2016, the HSE reported an Essex company was fined £150,000 after it failed to safely manage asbestos on its site. In 2015, a London Borough council was fined £66,000 after it exposed staff and visiting contractors to potentially lethal level of asbestos. In both cases, the asbestos had been previously identified.

The problem is all around us. In 2017, Schools Week reported 93 incidents of asbestos disturbance in schools between 2011 and 2016. Despite the use of asbestos being banned in the UK for decades, it is believed 85% of schools still have it onsite.

Exposure to asbestos can lead to some particularly aggressive forms of cancer and can be fatal.

The SGS Asbestos Risk Management Healthcheck helps non-domestic landlords and managers assess their vulnerability and mitigate risk regarding asbestos management.
