Corrosion Testing

SGS’s corrosion testing services – including salt spray tests – ensure that all the materials used within vehicles comply with international regulations.

Working in our accredited test laboratories, our automotive experts can help you assess the quality of your materials and to eradicate (or reduce the impact of) corrosion-related issues. This process can ensure your compliance with industry standards, such as those issued by the Deutsches Institut für Normung, or German Institute for Standardisation (e.g. DIN EN ISO 9227).

Salt spray test (DIN EN ISO 9227)

This standard describes the spraying of a salt solution in a testing chamber, either at 35ºC or 50ºC. Salt mist testing is common practice within the automotive industry, where materials, equipment and components are exposed and expected to comply with DIN EN ISO 9227 as well as:

  • IEC 60068-2-11 (International Electrotechnical Commission): Environmental testing - Part 2: Tests/Test Ka: Salt mist
  • DIN EN 60068-2-52 (Environmental testing - Part 2: Tests - Test Kb: Salt mist, cyclic)
  • DIN 50021 SS
  • DIN 53167
  • Telcordia GR-63
